Writing 2nd Story
Chicago's critically-acclaimed
2nd Story series tells stories the same way you would to your best friend over a glass of
wine (or two or five), except in this case that friend is an audience of a
hundred-plus. This workshop outlines the elements of a 2nd Story story, the
different writing and performance techniques used, and how we get them on
(and then off!) the page.
Open to everyone regardless of writing and/or performance experience, this
workshop is for people looking to enhance their storytelling skills, be it
for the stage or just out and about (and tipsy) with your friends.
Strongly suggested for people looking to
submit to 2nd Story.

"Mixing Genres"
taught by Michael Moreci
Students will study the manner in which writers mix genres. From crime
stories to adventure, students will be exposed to writers who fused
the literary novel with elements of popular fiction. The course will focus on
reading strategies that will help fiction writers as they approach their own
work. Each student will be expected to write and workshop one genre-bending
story.
Reading List:
Motherless Brooklyn, Jonathan Lethem
Gentlemen of the Road , Michael Chabon
Michael Moreci holds a Masters in Creative Writing from Northwestern
University. His fiction, reviews, and essays have appeared in Stop Smiling,
After Hours, Keepgoing, New City, North Shore, In These Times, Kiss Machine,
Identity Theory, and Other Voices
Saturday mornings, 10:30 am to 12:00 pm

A NEW WAY OF LOOKING AT WRITING
Sponsored by the Uptown Writer's Space and Jim Liautaud, UIC Clinical Professor, Behavior Research and Modification.
WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH OF AN IMPACT YOUR WRITING HAS ON OTHERS?
This is an opportunity to have the content of your work measured by an audience interested in good writing. The winning reading and winning poem from each session will be published on the Uptown Writers Space Website and will be included in the anthology titled, "The Statistics of Synchronicity: Writing Proven to Resonate."
FORMAT:
Ten writers will be allowed six minutes to read their work and will be given six minutes of audience response to their writing.
We'd especially love to hear creative-nonfiction, memoirs and poetry, but any original work can be presented. Workshops will be moderated by Julie Saltzman, a writer, editor and co-owner of the Uptown Writers Space. She will guarantee a safe, supportive environment for all attendees, function as a timekeeper and keep the discussion moving forward.
FEEDBACK/SELECTION FOR ANTHOLOGY:
The work will be responded to content only, not on craft. Each reading will be followed by a brief period for clarifying questions such as thematic elements, and character and plot development. The bulk of the response will be supportive comments and positive encouragement.
After the 6 minutes of discussion, each audience member will complete an anonymous five-point score card that gauges the personal impact the piece had on the reader. The primary goal of the questions will be to simply measure the impact of the content judged, on you, personally. The findings will be presented to the writer. The winning poet and the winning writer will have their piece published on our website and will be included in the anthology.
EXPECTATIONS:
OUT OF ALL THE PRESENTERS, WE EXPECT EACH OF THE ATTENDING AUDIENCE TO ENJOY, OR STRONGLY RELATE TO ONLY A THIRD OF THE PRESENTATIONS; WITH THE REMAINING EITHER MILDLY, OR NOT AT ALL OF INTEREST--GIVEN THE PERSONAL CONNECTION SOME WRITING HAS TO ALL OF US--AND TO OTHERS, NOT AT ALL.
YOU CAN ATTEND THESE SESSIONS AS A WRITER, LISTENER, OR BOTH.
DATES: 1/16, 2/6, 2/27, 3/12, 3/26, 4/9, 4/23, 5/14, 5/28
TIME: READINGS BEGIN PROMPTLY AT 6:30PM. WRITERS WILL READ IN ORDER OF SIGN-UP ON THE NIGHT OF THE SESSION. FIRST PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO WRITERS WHO ATTENDED A PREVIOUS SESSION AND WERE NOT GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO READ.
